Frequently Asked Questions about the L.A.C.
Introduction
The NCaeyc Governing Board voted in 2009 to create a new governance structure—a Local Affiliate Council—to advise the state Board and strengthen the relationships between local affiliates and the state association. NCaeyc’s Local Affiliate Council has representatives from our Board of Directors, our staff, our local affiliates and our local chapters.
What is the Local Affiliate Council (LAC)?
The LAC is comprised of one representative from each of the Boards of the local affiliates and chapters. The LAC meets twice a year to discuss concerns and share ideas with each other. The meetings often result in local affiliates learning from each other and often result in specific suggestions or requests directed to the state Board.
How are members of the LAC chosen?
Each affiliate or chapter Board decides how to select its representative to the LAC. It should be someone with a leadership position on the local Board who can commit to two LAC meetings per year and be responsible for sharing information from the local affiliate to the NCaeyc Board and then back to the local affiliate.
How does the LAC operate?
NCaeyc believes that the members of the LAC should have a voice in how the LAC operates. For this reason, policies and procedures for the LAC are developed with input from LAC members at their meetings. There is an NCaeyc staff member and two state Board members who work with the LAC on developing the policies and procedures. Before they are implemented, they go to the full state Board for approval.
Do LAC members serve on the NCaeyc Board of Directors?
The LAC appoints two members to serve on the NCaeyc Board of Directors. These members are fully functional Board members with all of the rights and responsibilities of any other NCaeyc Board member, but with the additional insight that serving on the LAC brings. These members attend all NCaeyc Board meetings (4 times per year) as well as the LAC meetings.
